IMPLEMENTATION Set:
Once the students are gathered on the rug, I will show them the book "It's Arkansas For Me." I will ask the students to describe what they see on the cover of the book. I will then asked them to tell me what they know about the state of Arkansas. The students have read this book before, so I will ask them to join in singing the words with me. When we finish the book, I will ask the students if they know what a symbol is. I will thengo back through the book pointing out the pictures of the different Arkansas state symbols.
Learning Activities/Time Required:
The time required for this activity is approximatly 30 minutes.
The students will sing the words to the book "It's Arkansas For Me." We will then go back through the book looking at the pictures that have an Arkansas State symbol, spending a little extra time on the Arkansas Flag. I will stop at the page that has the friendly people on it and use it as a transition. I will ask the students to show me how they think nice, friendly people would walk back to their tables. When all the students are sitting quietly at their tables we will start the activity. In the activity the students will be given a red piece of construction paper, and two pieces of white paper with flag patters on them. I will demonstrate how I want the students to construct their flags as we work on each step.
Closure:
When the students are done making their flags. I will review what the different symbols on the flag stand for. Questions that I will ask are: What the red, white, and blue on the Arkansas Flag stand for, What does the 25 stars stand for, What does the diamond shape stand for? I will asked each student to write 1 sentence on the back of their flag explaining what they have learned about their state flag.
When we are finished I will use the transition I used earlier to get the students to line-up for morning recess. Once they are lined up I will pass out the morning snack; today the snack will be an Arkansas state flag cookie. Then they will be dismissed for recess.
